Sports are the leading cause of eye injuries in all children under the age of 16. The most common eye injuries from sports are contusions, detached retinas, cataracts, and even the loss of an eye. However, over 90% of sports-related eye injuries are preventable! Protect your children against eye injuries with these 5 simple tips:
 

1. Ensure that your children wear protective eyewear when participating in any contact sports such as basketball, football, and all full contact activities.
2. Make sure that the protective eyewear lenses your child uses are made out of polycarbonate material. Polycarbonate is 10 times more resistant than other plastics and does not obscure vision.
3. Ordinary glasses and contact lenses are NOT a substitute for protective eyewear as they offer no protection against eye injuries.
4. Set an example for your child by wearing eye protection yourself when playing sports or full contact activities.
5. Encourage your child’s school or athletic club to adopt a policy on protective eyewear.
